1981-84: Projektleder vedr. kortlægning af okkerpotentielle områder i Jylland.

dannelse af jernholdige gruslag, der nedsætter dyrkningsværdien
1997- 2008: Vandingsbetingede landbrugssystemer.
1997- Dyrkningsforholdene i de gamle danske plantager i Ghana og bevaring af den
danske kulturarv i Ghana.
1992-2004: Studier af jernkappedannelse i bronzealdergravhøje. Der fokuseredes på
bestemmelse af processen ved jordbundskemiske analyser af jernkapper, der blev
udviklet en teori for dannelsen, som efterfølgende blev testet ved opbygning af
eksperimentalgravhøje på Lejre Forsøgscenter.
1998-2001: Kortlægning af gravhøjes bevaringstilstand i det agrare landskab.

Major Projects (selected):

1976-78:Soil mapping and land evaluation in Gadbjerg area, East Jutland (Ph.D.-thesis)

1978-79; The Danish scientific expedition to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

1980-81: Regional soil investigations in Himmerland, North Jutland (Dr of Science-thesis). At this study the principles for the nation-wide soil data base, later on established at the Bureau of Land Data, were laid down, just like the principles for the later mapping of potential acid sulphate soils in Jutland.

1981-84: Head of the pedological soil profile investigations along the main gas pipeline system across Denmark.

1981-84: Head of the mapping of potentially acid sulphate soils in Jutland. The map has later been used in the legislation for protecting water courses against ochre pollution.

1986-87: Head of the mapping of potentially marginal land (set aside) based on the nation-wide soil databases at the Bureau of Land Data.

1987-90: Participated in three projects in the NPO-programme. Head of one of the projects concerning nitrate leaching calculated by the DAISY-model; the two other projects were subcontracts concerning regional soil characterizations.


1987-90: Head of the pedological soil profile investigations in the nation-wide 7-km grid established by Landskontoret for Planteavl for improving the N-fertilization of the farmland.

1992-97: Head of the establishment of a European soil profile analytical database connected to a European-soil map in scale 1:1,000,000. Contract with Institute of Remote Sensing Application, ISPRA.


1994-95: Soil characterization of the 25 Danish plots in the EC-grid for monitoring forest health.

1999-2001: Mapping and characterization of Bronze age burial mounds in Denmark.

1993-2009: Head of the Danida financed Enrecaproject “Ecological Laboratory” building up laboratory facilities at University of Ghana for master and Ph.D. students and forming post doc research projects between Ghanaian and Danish researchers. My main research focused was on1) The Harmattan dust in relation to nutrient input to agricuoture 2) The termite activity as soil forming processes in the tropical semi-deciduous forest zone 3) The sustainability of the shallot production system at the Keta sand spit and 4) Nutrient turn over in the tropical semi-deciduous forest (appr. 20 Mill. Danish crowns)

2002-04:  Excavation of burial mound "Skelhøj"for studying the genesis and development of iron pans and blue cores in Bronze Age burial mounds.

2006-07: Participating in Galathea 3 studying soil forming processes and land evaluation on guano soils at Bellone Island, Solomon Island in the South Pacific Ocean,

2010-13: Member of the project group running the Danida financed project “Sustainable food production through irrigated intensive farming systems in West Africa. Head of the project in 2012-2013. (5.2 mill Danish Crowns)

2014-2016: Head of the project: The formation of Plateau dunes.This project focuses on the the development of placic horizons in podzols and their impact on the the genesis, location and age of plateau dunes. (0.2 mill. By Carlsberg Foundation)

2014-2015: Head of the the updating of a soil profile analytical database connected to the EU soil map at scale 1: 1M. (30.000 Euro financed by EU-Joint research centre in Ispra, Italy).

2009-2015: The National Museum’s investigation of the Jelling monuments financed by Bikuben Fonden. Subcontract: Borings in the Jelling burial mounds and similar mounds (app. 0.5 Mill crowns).

2014-2018: Part of the Danida financed project “Green Cohesive Agricultural Resource Management” where the effect of biochar on the soil fertility is studied in Ghana (app. 0.4 mill. Crowns)

 

Funding

All the major projects have got external funding from e.g. Danida, EU, Research Councils in Denmark, Danish Ministries, Dronning Margrethe IIs Fond, National Museum and Bikubenfonden and Carlsberg.

 

International relations.

I co-operate at EU level with scientists in all EU member states through my work with the EU soil analytical database. Outside EU I have close cooperation with scientists at university of Ghana through more than 20 years. We have published in international journals but also published a scientific journal “West African Journal of Applied Ecology” for 15 years.

 

Supervision

Taught physical geography, especially soil geography and environmental science for more than thirty years at BA and Master level. Have supervised Ph.D students and evaluated Ph.D. theses. I have arranged Ph.D. courses in Denmark and Ghana.
