Laboratories at IGN

IGN has several laboratories. They are used for teaching and research for students on all levels: bachelor, master and PhD students and other scientific staff. Some of the laboratories also perform analyses for clients outside the department.

The laboratories and instruments are used within the fields of minerals, rocks and isotopes; earth, water, sedimentology and palaeontology, biomass, genetics and diversity, as well as biochemistry.

  • Minerals, rocks and isotopes

IGN has several laboratories within minerals, rocks and isotopes, including the electron microprobe laboratory and the separation laboratory.

  • Earth, water, sedimentology and palaeontology

Gamma Dating Centre and Malvern Laser-sizer laboratory are in this group.

  • Biomass science and technology

The biomass science and technology group has three main types of facilities: A preparation and processing lab, a chromatography lab and a spectroscopy lab.

  • Genetics and diversity

The DNA laboratory provides data for research in forest genetics, particularly in the fields of tree breeding and population genetics, and pest and pathogens species.

  • Biogeochemistry laboratory

The biogeochemistry laboratory is running solid (biomaterial, soil), liquid and gaseous samples.

  • Tissue culture laboratory

The research is focused on plant physiology and development of methods for in vitro propagation of a large variety of different plant species.
