DGG researcher publishes a book with Cambridge University Press

Dr.scient. Irina Artemieva recently strengthened her reputation as leading researcher in the secular evolution of the lithosphere by publishing the book " The lithosphere - An Interdisciplinary Approach" with the renowned publisher Cambridge University Press. On 800 pages the author reviews current knowledge about the lithosphere and asks a series of central questions for future research on the subject.

The solid lithosphere plates of the Earth form the basis for the central fundamental geoscience theory of Plate Tectonics. The multi-disciplinary content comprises geophysical, geochemical and petrological aspects. The book already forms the basis for teaching at several universities in USA, Canada and Europe, including the course on "The evolving lithosphere" at DGG.

In the foreword of the book, the president of International Lithosphere Programme, Prof. S. Cloetingh, summarises the content by writing: " Multi-disciplinary in scope, global in geographical extent, and covering a wide variety of tectonic settings over 3.5 billion years of Earth history, this book presents a comprehensive overview of lithospheric structure and evolution. It is a core reference for researchers and advanced students in geophysics, geodynamics, tectonics, petrology, and geochemistry, and for petroleum and mining industry professionals".

The Editorial Reviews include:
"Irina Artemieva provides a broad-reaching and detailed description of the lithosphere, and the different disciplines required to fully understand it, from seismology to petrology. She explains the mysteries of geochemistry to geophysicists and the complexity and rigor of the geophysical approach to earth scientists in general, making this book of immense value to all geologists." - Nicholas Arndt, Université Joseph Fourier, France

"The Lithosphere provides a fresh, authoritative and comprehensive look at an enduring scientific problem. The interdisciplinary approach makes this an invaluable reference for researchers and graduate students across diverse areas of Earth Science, including seismology, tectonics, geodynamics and geochemistry." - David W. Eaton, University of Calgary, Canada

Irina Artemieva is an Associate Professor at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen. She was awarded a M.Sc. in Physics from Lomonosov Moscow State University, a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the Institute of Physics of the Earth, Moscow and a Doctor of Science (dr. scient.) degree from the University of Copenhagen. Dr. Artemieva has been employed as a researcher at the Russian/USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, at the Universities of Uppsala (Sweden) and Strasbourg (France), and at the United States Geological Survey in California.

She was Science Co-ordinator of the European Science Foundation/ International Lithosphere Programme EUROPROBE programme 1999–2001. She is a member of Academia Europaea and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, London.
