Geomicrobiology & Biogeochemistry Laboratory

The lab provides research space for Post-doctoral researchers, PhD students, and MSc students, as well as experienced researchers in the fields of geomicrobiology and aqueous biogeochemistry, but also in microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, mineralogy, paleoclimate studies and related.

Microbial cells and minerals on plastic exposed to harbor waters for 3 months.

Current research explores i.e., biogeochemical cycling, geomicrobiology, cell-surface interactions, diagenetic processes, biogenic/abiogenic minerals, microbial physiology, historical microbiology proxies, isotope biogeochemistry, and the environmental fate of plastics down to the nanoscale in water and sediment.

The Geomicrobiology lab is part of the Sediment & Aqueous Geochemistry, Geomicrobiology laboratory cluster.

The lab is fully equipped for aerobic and anaerobic cultivation and analysis of microorganisms; sterile bench, fume hoods, incubators, autoclaves, light/fluorescent microscopy, cool rooms. Experimentation with plastic is supported with microscopic methods (Nile Red), UV degradation systems. Geochemical analyses of water and sediment; spectrophotometry, sequential extraction of iron species, TOC, carbonates, XRF, IC are carried out in the Sediment and aqueous Geochemistry lab

In addition, we have a full suite of instrumentation for field sampling of water and sediment for the exploration of microbe-mineral-plastic interactions.
