My research is focused on identifying global trends in protected area dynamics (changes in boundaries and designations of protected areas through time). This work will explain the sociopolitical and environmental drivers of these changes, and assess the consequences for biodiversity.

My past work has focused on conservation issues surrounding fungi, plants, and terrestrial wildlife in the southeastern United States, the cloud forests of Peru, and the Ecuadorian Amazon. I remain interested in all facets of environmental conservation from pure ecology to environmental politics, thus my research is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on knowledge from the fields of biology, forestry, geography, economics, and political science.
