I am a Ph.D. candidate whose research focuses on the role of institutions in environmental upgrading in the Colombian cocoa value chain. I am exploring the topic through semi-structured interviews, a desk review of publicly available data and a farmer household survey involving cacao farmers in the Colombian departments of Caqueta and Cesar. With this, I am developing manuscripts on how Colombian chocolate companies are ensuring the environmental sustainability of the cacao production system and why; how state and international cooperation agencies involved in the Colombian cocoa value chain aims to develop a value chain that can be a tool for reducing illicit crop production, sustaining the peacebuilding process and ensuring green cacao production in Colombia; and what motivates Colombian cacao producers to adopt sustainable farming practices.
