A new institute gathers knowledge about geography, geology, forest and nature management and landscape architecture and planning

Department of Geography & Geology and most of Forest & Landscape at University of Copenhagen have merged as of January 1, 2013: Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN). The department is part of “Geocenter Denmark” and “The National Center for Forest, Landscape and Planning”.

The research conducted at Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Managements covers a broad range of fields including geology, geography and geoinformatics, forest, nature and biomass, landscape architecture, green space management and urban and rural landscape planning. The research forms the basis of the teaching of a number of Bachelor's degree programs, Master's degree programs, vocational training courses, PhD programs and a number of further and supplementary programs. In addition, the department provides research-based consultancy and public-sector cooperation, particularly for the Danish Ministry of the Environment and municipalities.

The department is part of “Geocenter Denmark”, a national center of geoscientific research, education, consulting, innovation and publishing at a high international level. Geocenter Denmark is a formalised cooperation between Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), Department of Earth Sciences at Aarhus University and Geological Museum and Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen.

Additionally, the department is part of “The National Center for Forest, Landscape and Planning” (still called “Forest & Landscape”), which is a national center for research, education and consultancy services within forest and forest products, landscape architecture and landscape management and also urban planning and design. Forest & Landscape runs across the following departments: Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen. Forest & Landscape has its own board of directors, which represents stakeholders and employees.

The new Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and “Forest & Landscape” are managed by Niels Elers Koch, who is also part of Geocenter Denmark’s leadership team.
