Presentation at the first conference of the Environmental and Climate Mobilities Network (ECMN)
From the 10-13 July (2023), the University of Vienna hosted the launch event for the new Environmental and Climate Mobilities Network (ECMN). The focus of the network (and the conference) is to stimulate a transdisciplinary understanding of migration and (im)mobilities in the context of environmental and climate change. Project PI Jytte Agergaard contributed to the ECMN launch event with a presentation on ‘Africa’s small towns as sustainable centres for environmental mobilities’ taking point of departure in the RurbanClimate project.
The RurbanClimate presentation highlighted the need for an expansion of the environmental mobilities agenda to include a focus on transformations of small towns; the locales where the majority of rural-urban migrants are making their living. In conclusion, the presentation discussed the importance of developing transformative adaptation to climate change along the rural-urban continuum and supporting strong local governance for supporting inclusive and sustainable environments for multi-local living and migrants’ settlements in small towns.
