Alexander Prishchepov

Associate Professor

My research falls within the field of Land System Science. I received Ph.D. in 2010 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I focused on Remote Sensing of Environment and Land-Use Modeling. I conduct integrative work to understand the patterns, drivers, and implications of land-cover change, with a focus on agricultural expansion and decline, rural-urban transitions, and the human impact on environmental systems. I use a variety of methods, including satellite remote sensing, participatory approaches, spatial econometrics, and machine learning, to reveal the patterns of landscape change and its drivers. My research aims to answer several key questions, including:

-What methods are best suited to monitor the current and past landscapes?

-What factors contribute to the formation and transformation of landscapes?

-What are the consequences of landscape and land-use transitions for the environment and society?

-What solutions are available to help guide land-use development pathways?

I publish in leading in my field international peer-reviewed journals and research is covered by renowned outlets, such as Nature News, Science Magazine, Berlingske. You can watch some relevant webinars on my Youtube channel.

My mission is to conduct relevant research, teaching and ad-hoc practical works in order to address Sustainable Development Goals: SDG15 Life on Land,  SDG2 Zero Hunger, SDG4 Quality Education, SDG13 Climate Action, SDG11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG1 No Poverty, SDG16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. I serve as an associate editor for the international peer-reviewed journals, Springer "Landscape Series", providing ad-hoc consultancy and relevant proposal reviews for organizations like the UNCCD, IPBES, WorldBank,  governments and national research foundations. I review articles for Nature Sustainability, Nature Food, Environmental Research Letters, Global Environmental Change,  Remote Sensing of Environment, GIScience and Remote Sensing, Land Use Policy, Land Degradation and Development.

I am a scientific steering board member of the Global Land Programme (GLP) https://glp.earth/ and also coordinate GLP's interdisciplinary Global Land Abandonment Working Group: https://bit.ly/3uYmGn7,  with a scope collaboratively to understand emerging patterns, reasons, and implications of global farmland abandonment and rural-urban transitions.

My teaching portfolio includes carefully crafted classes at the Bachelor and Master-level on the interdisciplinary use of satellite remote sensing, data classification methods, and evaluation of global land-use transition processes. An example of such a class- is Remote Sensing for Land System Studies https://kurser.ku.dk/course/nigk17012u

My extracurricular activities include outdoor activities (I love the Danish coastal landscapes, but also travels in the frontiers) and diving into environmental history for a better understanding the legacy of Russian, German, and Danish explorers, such as Adam Johann von Krusenstern, Alexander von Humboldt, Vitus Bering.
