Inger Kappel Schmidt, Professor, Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management. Master in plant ecology (1993) and Ph.D. (1997) Biological Institute, University of Copenhagen. . Research
Inger Kappel Schmidt has conducted ecosystem research since 1993. Focus has been on forest and heathland ecology with emphasis on ecosystem processes and function and whole ecosystem ecology. The emphasis has been on interactions between biogeochemistry and biodiversity, natural processes versus management, soil C and N related processes, plant nutrients and uptake, decomposition and litter quality, nutritional and climate stress. Recent research focus on above- and belowground plant community responses and carbon-nitrogen interactions to environmental changes and the impact on ecosystem services.
The research of ecosystem key-processes has been conducted in large-scale field experiments with realistically manipulations of temperature, CO2, light, nutrients, water and carbon in terrestrial ecosystems and the interactions between drivers of change. The objectives has been to assess ecosystem stability in a changing environment and the resilience.
Major projects Silva Nova – University of Copenhagen (ku.dk), VKR Climate Centre of Excellence www.climaite.ku.dk and the climate network INCREASE www.increase.ku.dk , coordinated by Inger Kappel Schmidt.
