I am associate professor in landscape architecture and urban design and active in the research groups Landscape Architecture and Urbanism and Spatial Change and Planning. I work with the transformation and development of cities and landscapes through spatial design. What are the politics and agency of design? My research contributes to a growing body of relational urban design and planning theory, specifically based on new materialism and actor-network theory. Focus areas are strategic planning, urban/rural public space, heritage in planning, and research-through-design. My work bridges theory and practice at the intersection of landscape architecture, urban design and planning. I am a capacity in design-based research in this field drawing on 12 years’ international experience of architecture practice.
I was trained as an architect at TU Berlin and ENSA Lyon and hold a PhD from the Aarhus School of Architecture (2009) which was published as a book Towards an Urbanism of Entanglement: Site Explorations in Polarised Danish Urban Landscapes (2011).
Current research
Current national and international research projects include:
- Livskvalitet i yderområder og landdistrikter (Quality of life in peripheral rural areas). (Realdania, 2018-2022). Leader of subproject on quality of life and innovation in the built environment
- Public Space in European Social Housing (PUSH). (Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA), 2019-2021). Leader of work package on Exhibition as tool (analogue and online).
- Exploring Public Space in Rural Transformation. (NOS-HS, 2019-2020). Nordic research network and series of workshops for a new research agenda in spatial design and planning.
- Reconfiguring Welfare Landscapes (WELLAND). (Independent Research Fund Denmark, 2016-2020) Sub-project leader Materialising welfare landscapes of social housing
- DEMOSSPACE – democratic dimensions of urban public space. (The Research Council of Norway, 2016-2020). International research partner to the project at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU)
Teaching
I teach in the international Landscape Architecture programme.
- Co-responsible for the master course Theories of Urban Design (7,5 ECTS, since 2010)
- Responsible for the master course Transformation Studio (15 ECTS, since 2014, not in 2020 due to sabbatical). The Transformation Studio works as a laboratory for strategic planning through landscape projects in shrinking rural areas. Bridging design research, education and practice we collaborate each year with a Danish municipality and work on site in dialogue with local planners, politicians, experts, project makers and communities. The resulting strategic landscape projects are collected in a course magazine to serve as inspiration for future development to our cooperation partners.
